Old age homes in India
One of the important components of social and individual life of people is their age factor. Children of age zero to fourteen basically depend on their parents for living, studying and developing in every aspect of life. Whereas, adults of age fifteen to fifty nine are independent and they are economically active too. Likewise, senior citizens of age sixty and above are both independent and dependent. However, senior citizens are known as a dependent population as well as children. Dependent populations, in general, are not involved in economic activities. So they need some sort of care from other people. In this regard the additional support and care may be taken as a burden by family members and thus senior citizens may face various problems in their rest of life. The definition of old age varies from country to country and that variation also affects the social position of the aged. The age of 60 or 65 is equivalent to retirement age in most countries, and is said to be the beginning of old age. The age of 60 as a cut-off point is consistently employed in the world countries to define the elderly. In India the retirement age is 60.
The SAARC countries contain a 6.92 percent aged population of 60 and over which is 15.62 percent of the total population of the world, 31.6 percent of the aged population of Asia and 94.4 percent of the total aged of South Asia. The total population of the SAARC countries is 23 percent of the total world population, 36.4 percent of the total population of Asia and 93.4 percent of the total population of South Asia. Many factors related to population aging present challenges to Governments and other stakeholders across Asia and the Pacific. However, nowadays many people are not much fond of their older parents and they either torture them or create a worst situation after that their older ones want to leave the house and goes to any old age home to live peacefully and happily. For that, in India a lot of old age homes have been established in large numbers to give shelter to the older people in one roof.
